Cleaning the air in your house: various pollutants in different rooms
Air pollution in the kitchen
The main pollutants in the kitchen are cooking dust and odours.
Cooking food causes dust and chemicals that degrade the air quality in your kitchen and can cause breathing problems. To purify the air on the kitchen side, it is a question of aeration. When preparing good meals, remember to turn on the hood and open the windows.
There is also the risk of carbon monoxide leakage from some failed combustion appliances: Water heaters, stoves, boilers and cooking equipment wood, coal, gas or oil are real dangers if they are badly installed or damaged. Be vigilant, as carbon monoxide is an odourless and colourless substance that can cause serious health problems if inhaled severely.
Air pollution in the bathroom
The main pollutants in the bathroom are mould spores and VOCs from household products.
The pollutants that degrade the air quality in your bathroom are mainly organic. These are mould spores and they abound in damp and dark rooms. The icing on the cake, to eliminate them, you use cleaning agents that also emit pollutants called Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs).
This vicious circle of indoor air pollution can be avoided by installing an efficient ventilation system, but also by carrying out a measured and aerated cleaning to replace the polluted air as quickly as possible.
Air pollution in the living room
The main pollutants at the show are tobacco smoke and chemicals.
Ambient products (candles, incense) and deodorant sprays that you use to clean the air in your living room are real pollutants! They emit Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) which mask odours, but which strongly degrade air quality and can affect breathing. It is best to limit their use and ventilate. The French Ministry of Ecological Transition recommends air renewal as soon as you use one of these products and generally, twice a day.
Finally, your reconstituted wood chest of drawers in your living room features blends of glue, lacquer and solvents responsible for formaldehyde, one of the most toxic Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). If you have just acquired your new furniture, leave it for several days in a very ventilated place (balcony, cellar) to let toxic compounds emanate. Whenever possible, solid wood should be preferred to reconstituted wood, as the formaldehyde concentration is lower. Compounds coming from tobacco smoke (tar, carbon monoxide, heavy metals…) become embedded in furniture and textile (named environmental tobacco). They pollute indoor air till 18 hours after having smoked the last cigarette, even if you aerate! One unique solution here, avoid cigarette in your interior.
Air pollution in the bedroom
The main pollutants in the bedroom are dust mites, embedded in mattresses, drapes, carpets, sofas…
Mites love sleeping next to you! They nestle in bedding and carpets and release allergens that are harmful to health. To limit their presence in your bedroom, you will have no other choice than cleaning and changing your bedding regularly and renew the air.
For an efficient household, use a vacuum cleaner by changing the bags regularly. Ideally, you can opt for a device equipped with a HEPA filter (High Efficiency for Airborne Particles), capable of retaining the finest dust responsible for indoor pollution.
Finally, beware of anti-stain, anti-mite and anti-allergy fabrics marketed to protect mattresses from various allergens. These treatments can release Volatile Organic Components (VOC) harmful to the respiratory tract.
